Sergio helps obtain maximum value from his customer’s steam co-generation facility by enabling more efficient and productive operation. This is done by identifying energy-saving opportunities, developing plans for securing resources, and implementing innovative programs that effectively meet the facility’s challenging business goals.
In the process, he and his staff of four engineers have improved plant efficiency by four percent by optimizing chemistry, reducing blowdown, and aggressively implementing preventive maintenance procedures. At the same time, they have developed more effective standard operating procedures and raised maintenance standards, achieving new levels of performance consistency and repeatability.
Sergio has more than 22 years of engineering management experience. Throughout that time, he has become increasingly skilled at applying engineering principles to meet his customers’ objectives, and at overseeing facility and plant systems start-ups. He has also developed superior project management, planning, and budgeting expertise.
Sergio started his career as a shift supervisor at the North Andover Rural Electric Supply Cooperative (RESCO), a 1,500-ton-per-day waste-to-energy facility, where he managed a team of six operators on a rotating shift. He then moved to Ogden Martin Systems of Haverhill as chief engineer at a municipal solid waste incineration site. There he oversaw an operation that processed 1,650 tons of municipal refuse per day, producing 45 megawatts of electricity per hour.
The company promoted him to facility engineer, a position that required evaluating systems and equipment performance in a mass–burn waste-to-energy facility, which included a refuse-derived fuel production facility, the Lawrence (MA) thermal conversion facility, and a landfill.
He then became an Ogden Martin facility manager, overseeing the operation and maintenance of a waste-to-energy co-generation facility. During his tenure in this position, he improved plant capacity by 10 percent, reduced in-plant steam requirements by 35,000 lbs/hr at a savings of $1.8 million in annual operating costs, and saved another $200,000 by eliminating the need for costly replacement equipment and cutting cleaning costs.
Before joining BTE, he worked for N-R-G Services, Inc. as chief engineer at the Hogan Regional Center, where his responsibilities included managing the day-to-day technical aspects of a steam co-generation facility.
Fluent in Italian, Sergio holds a bachelor’s degree in marine/mechanical engineering from the Nautical Technical Institute Tommaso d’Aosta Duca di Genoa in Trieste, as well as a Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ first-class engineer license, and an Italian engine room captain license.
He also has obtained his universal chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant recovery certification and has been certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a chief facility operator of a resource recovery facility. In addition to completing the OSHA safety and health 10-hour training course and the OSHA trainer course in occupational safety and health standards for general industry, he is a U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-accredited professional.
When not spending time with his two daughters, Sergio volunteers with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, an international charitable organization. He also likes to read, play chess, and solve Sudoku puzzles.
